Plain City, Ohio
North Liberty was platted by Lucas Sullivant in 1797. It was located on the southern bank of the Big Darby Creek in the south eastern portion of Darby Township. The only settlers to have taken up residence in this village was the Ewing family. They later moved to Westminster (present-day Plain City). Varying accounts place this lost village in either Darby Township or Jerome Township.
According to information from the US Postal Service, prior to the platting of a town in the area, there was a post office established near the town site on January 11, 1811. It is assumed that this is the post office referred to as Darby Creek in local histories. The first postmaster was James Ewing. This post office is also credited with being the first post office in present day Union County, and it was located on the old Post Road (present day SR 161).
Plain City was originally platted as the village of Westminster in 1818 by David Chapman for Dr. Isaac Bigelow on early day Post Road (now SR 161). Upon its founding, the town lay wholly in Madison County. The village was resurveyed in 1823, and the name was changed from Westminster to Pleasant Valley. Dr. Isaac Bigelow was the first mayor of Pleasant Valley upon its incorporation on February 15, 1842. In 1851 the railroad was built through the village. By 1859 the village had "grown" into Union County.
Dr. Isaac Bigelow kept the first store in this village. In 1865 the town paid its final respects to President Abraham Lincoln as his funeral train passed through the town. The Plain City Press printed its first paper on March 11, 1873. The first church built in the village belonged to the Methodist Episcopal congregation. By 1876 the Plain City Methodist Episcopal Church had located into a part of the village in Union County on present day US 42.
The name of the town was again changed in 1877 to Plain City. The town clock was donated to the village by "Uncle Sammy" Samuel Taylor. This center piece to the town was dedicated on November 15, 1902 with a celebration that included an ox roast, speeches by dignitaries (including most notably Dr. W. O. Thompson, President of the Ohio State University), and fireworks.

Pottersburg, Ohio
The town had its beginnings as a stop on the Atlantic and Great Western Railway in 1864. Captain Jonas Cline was appointed the ticket master. In 1869, a sawmill was built in the area by Capt. Cline. He later built the first house for Abel Lary in 1869. Cline also built a house for himself and a small store in the area in the same year. This town was surveyed on February 18, 1869 by Andrew S. Mowry for David A Williams and George F. Bennet. The survey was recorded on May 1, 1869 with Union County Recorder, James Smith. Capt. Cline was a very driving force in the growth of this village. In 1869 he successfully petitioned for a US post office and was named the village's first postmaster. By 1872 the railway erected a proper depot in this thriving village. This new depot included a telegraph office. An addition was made to the village in 1872. This addition was surveyed by Thomas Cowgill on October 22, 1872 for W. Armstrong. This addition was recorded on December 17, 1872 by Hiram Raney, Union County Recorder. In 1877 the Pottersburg Methodist Episcopal Church was formed. This congregation erected a house of worship in the town in 1880. A two story school house was built in the village from 1881-82. The old Pottersburg school district is now a part of the Marysville School District. Today all that remains of Pottersburg are a few houses and the closed Pottersburg United Methodist Church.

York Center, Ohio
The York Rural School District was first chartered in 1915. The school building was erected in 1915. A high school was chartered for this district in York Center in 1920. This school district arose from an earlier consolidation of an earlier York Center School and the Bokes Creek (Summersville) School. The York Rural School District was consolidated with the Byhalia School District in 1952. This consolidated school would eventually be consolidated with other schools in the northern section of Union County to for the North Union School District.

Bardstown and Loretto
A trip to Kentucky would just not be complete without a detour through Bardstown. And, so we detoured on our journey through Bardstown, the Bourbon Capital of the World, before we headed down the road to Loretto. We even drove by Federal Hill, a possible inspiration for the song, "My Old Kentucky Home." My girls begged to stop in Bardstown, noting the historic town square, but Dennis and I were on a mission. We wanted to go to Makers Mark.
Loretto, Kentucky is a tiny town, barely more than a cluster of homes a few businesses. But, it is a world renown spot in bourbon circles. Early settlers to the area included Catholic Nuns. However, today, the most famous place near Loretto is the Makers Mark Distillery. This distillery is on the Register of National Historic Places. The distillery was previously owned by the Burks family. It was later purchased by the Samuels family, creators of Makers Mark Bourbon.

On to Knob Creek - the Childhood Home of President Abraham Lincoln
My daughters were thrilled to visit this farm, as it was once home to their favorite president. And, my husband liked its connection to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Did you know that just north of the Lincoln Cabin on Knob Creek was a distillery? Thomas Lincoln worked intermittently at this distillery, when not busy tending his farm. This distillery was owned by Waddie Boone, a relative of Daniel Boone. Thomas probably did carpentry work and may have even made barrels for the Boones. Young Abraham would often come to the distillery with meals for his father. And, on occasion, Abraham even found odd jobs to help with around the distillery. To honor this history, the Jim Beam Distillery created the Knob Creek Bourbon.
In 1814, the Lincoln Family moved to the Knob Creek Farm. This was a small 30 acre farm a few miles north of Sinking Spring Farm. It was here that Abraham learned to read. And, he was often found telling stories to his young friends, while taking breaks from his chores on the farm.
While at this farm, young Abraham once fell into Knob Creek. He later recounted this in his writings. Fortunately, his friend, Austin Gollaher, heard Abraham's cries and rescued him. The Gollaher family were neighbors to the Lincoln family. And, in modern times the Gollaher cabin was moved to the Knob Creek farm where it remains preserved today.
The Lincoln Family left the Knob Creek Farm in 1816. This was the year that a local court ruled against Thomas Lincoln in the land dispute over the Sinking Spring Farm. They moved to Perry County, Indiana.
A Detour to the site of Abraham Lincoln's Birth
What does our 16th President have to do with bourbon? A lot more than most people might think. But, this connection will have to wait until my next post. This post is about the Sinking Spring Farm in Kentucky.
The Sinking Spring Farm was purchased by Thomas and Nancy Lincoln in late 1808. And, on February 12, 1809, their son, Abraham, was born. Within a few years, Thomas Lincoln lost this farm in a land dispute. Not to be discouraged, the Lincoln family moved to a farm on Knob Creek, a few miles to the north.
The farm was purchased by a man from New York, A.W. Dennett, in 1894. He soon dismantled a home on the property that was rumored to have been built with logs from the original Lincoln cabin. These logs were eventually sold to the Lincoln Farm Association, who discovered that these were not logs from the original Lincoln cabin. By 1916, this farm was donated to the National Park System by the Lincoln Farm Association.
The Bourbon Trail. . . Jim Beam Outpost
My girls are following in their parents footsteps. They are quickly becoming fanatics of American History. Hence, most family trips and vacations involve at least one stop at a historical destination. So, it should be of no surprise that my husband wanted to follow the Bourbon Trail this morning. And, in the spirit of American History, I am going to explore the history of Jim Beam.
The Beam Family
The patriarch of the Beam family was Johannes Reginald Boehm. Upon his immigration to the United States from Germany, the family surname was changed to Beam. The Beam family began to distill bourbon whiskey in the 1790s. And, in 1795, Johannes' son, Jacob Beam began to sell barrels of this bourbon. The first Beam bourbon was called Old Jake Beam. And, the original distillery was called Old Tub.
The next generation was represented by David Beam. His son, David M. Beam, relocated the distillery to Nelson County to take advantage of the easy access to easy railroad transportation. Colonel James Beauregard Beam, son of David M. Beam, was the next member of the Beam family to run the distilling business. He ran the company before Prohibition. And, in 1920, he sold the family's distillery. He rebuilt the distillery in Clermont, Kentucky after Prohibition was repealed.
In 1946, Jeremiah Beam, son of Jim Beam, took over the distillery. Under his leadership, a second distillery was opened at Boston, Kentucky in 1954. Frederick "Booker" Noe, II, a grandson of Jim Beam, became the Master Distiller at the Boston Distillery in 1960. Noe was the sixth generation of the Beam family involved in the distilling of bourbon.
Frederick Booker Noe, III, also known as Fred, became the seventh generation of the Beam family to distill bourbon in 2007. The company remains in Clermont, Kentucky to this day.

Colonel James Beauregard Beam, son of David M. Beam, was the next member of the Beam family to run the distilling business. He ran the company before Prohibition. And, in 1920, he sold the family's distillery. He rebuilt the distillery in Clermont, Kentucky after Prohibition was repealed.
In 1946, Jeremiah Beam, son of Jim Beam, took over the distillery. Under his leadership, a second distillery was opened at Boston, Kentucky in 1954. Frederick "Booker" Noe, II, a grandson of Jim Beam, became the Master Distiller at the Boston Distillery in 1960. Noe was the sixth generation of the Beam family involved in the distilling of bourbon.
Frederick Booker Noe, III, also known as Fred, became the seventh generation of the Beam family to distill bourbon in 2007. The company remains in Clermont, Kentucky to this day.

Another Stop in Louisville. . . Churchill Downs
Churchill Downs was opened in 1874 in Lousville, Kentucky by Colonel Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., a grandson of explorer William Clark. The track was named after his uncles, John and Henry Churchill, who leased the 80 acre piece of land that the track was built upon. In 1893, Clark sold the track to a syndicate led by William Appelgate. Under the leadership of this syndicate, the famous twin-spired grandstand was built in 1895.

In 1855, J. F. Hillerich opened a shop in Louisville, Kentucky. This shop specialized in wood products, primarily butter churns, porch columns, and stair railings. In 1884, Mr. Hillerich's son, Bud, invited a local major league baseball player to the shop to make a baseball bat. Initially, Mr. Hillerich thought the bats to be a waste of time, but he soon was allowing workers in the shop to make bats for local players. By 1894, the shop was doing so well, that Mr. Hellerich allowed his son, Bud, to take over the business. In 1894, the Hillerich family also registered a trademark for Louisville Slugger. Lousville Slugger was the highest selling baseball bat by the mid-1920s. Today the company sells an entire line of baseball gear, including gloves, helmets, and other baseball gear.

Magnetic Springs, Ohio
Green Bend
The original community in the Magnetic Springs area was called Green Bend. In 1881 the name was changed to Kokosing to honor the indians. Kokosing
This is the name given to present day Magnetic Springs in 1881.
Magnet City
This is another reference to Magnetic Springs.
Magnetic SpringsMagnetic Springs grew up around the spring that was discovered on the property of J. E. Newhouse when he was digging a well to supply water to his pond. The spring was discovered in 1879. By the next year a dozen houses existed on the site. A bath house and hotel accommodations were soon built for visitors to the village. Also, by 1882 the population of the village floated between seasons from 300 to 500. The village was able to support two hotels, a bath house, two grocery stores, a hardware store, a jeweler, a billiard parlor, a meat market, a livery stable, a blacksmith shop, and a photo gallery. The town was officially incorporated in 1883. By 1903 a trolley was running between Delaware and Magnetic Springs. This line was extended to include Richwood. By 1919 the automobile had made this trolley line obsolete. In 1949 there was a mob presence in the village.
The exact date of Leesburg first school session can not be found. But, it is believed that an early school was held in a log school house by Samuel Pharis, just south of Pharisburg. Another early teacher in the township was Naomi Carney. At one time there were as many as twelve one room school houses in Leesburg Township. These school houses included the Magnetic Springs, Stringtown, Half Acre, Elliott, Styre, District Number 2, Pharisburg, Hildreth, Blackhawk, Bonnette, Bluescreek, and Beechgrove schools. The Magnetic Springs frame school house was erected in 1882 with O. C. DeGood serving as the first teacher in the village. The Magnetic Springs School pictured was erected in 1914. The consolidated Leesburg-Magnetic Springs School was organized in 1937. The school building in Magnetic Springs was used for this district.Today in History - March 25

New California, Ohio
A frame school house was built in the village in 1852. This school was known as the New California Select School or the Little Brown Schoolhouse. In 1909 a larger school was built in the village that housed 12 grades. This school received its charter in 1913. By 1913 plans were made to build a high school. This is the high school that the Jerome Special students would later attend as well. The school district was eventually absorbed by the Jonathan Alder School District.

New Dover was founded as Dover.

In 1852 the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati & Indianapolis Railroad made its way through Dover township. On May 11, 1854 land was surveyed for the village of Dover near the site of the railroad. Adam Richey built the first house in the village in the fall of that same year. A harness shop was opened in the village in 1854. By the early 1880s the town boasted a population of 150 people. A sawmill was built in the village in 1881. At one time the town supported three blacksmiths, a harness shop, a grain elevator, two general stores, and two tile factories. Over time the name of this village evolved to New Dover.
The first school sessions in Dover Township were believed to have been held in long cabins on the banks of Mill Creek. At one time there eight one room school houses in the township. By 1883 Dover Township was divided into seven subdistricts. A wooden frame schoolhouse was erected in the village of New Dover in the latter part of the 19th century. This building was replaced by a two-story brick stucture in 1914 to accomodate the consolidation of all township schools at New Dover. The Dover Rural School district received its charter in 1919. The New Dover School building housed only grades 1-8 by 1948. Students were bussed to either Marysville or Ostrander. By 1957 the school district was consolidated into the Marysville Village School District. The New Dover School served as an elementary school for the Marysville School district until 1973. The New Dover building was sold to the Dover Township trustees for $1. This building was destroyed to make room for a community building in 1977. However, the Old Dover School, a smaller wood frame building, still stands in the village on US Route 36.

Census Records
Okay, I guess I need to make a confession. I was in a BAD mood the day I filled out my questionnaire for the last census. I hastily wrote that there were 8 people living at our address. I did not fill out any more information than that. And, now I am regretting this hasty response. Years from now I am sure my descendants will be talking about loony Grandma Rebekah and how she just scribbled across the census form very limited information.
My regret comes as I have spent the last few months pouring over census records. I have been following my ancestors from east to west and then back east again. Had my ancestors refused to give information on those in their families, my journey across the country through the census records may not have been possible. And, so, I apologize to the future generations of my family.

Where's Waldo?
So, today I sat to write an entry, and the question, "Where's Waldo?" kept popping into my head. I have no idea where Waldo, the person, is. But, I can tell you exactly where Waldo, Ohio is located. This small Ohio town is northwest of Delaware Lake in Marion County, Ohio on US Route 23. And, quite ironically, this is another small Ohio village that grew up on the Scioto or Harrison Trail. Locally, the trail is referred to as, "The Harrison Military Road."

The Overland Inn at McCutchenville, Ohio
Today my family traveled to the northern part of Ohio. And, on the way we passed through the village of McCutchenville. On the south side of this quaint village is an old stage coach inn from pioneer days. I immediately made a note to find out more when I got back home. This is what I have learned.
THE OVERLAND INN
It is probably best to start with the history of the Ohio State Route 53. Ohio 53 generally follows the path of the Harrison Trail trough Wyandot County in Ohio. The Harrison Trail was a trail mapped and used by General William Henry Harrison during the War of 1812. His unrealized plan was to not only use this trail to defend the Ohio frontier from Indians, but to also use this trail in a possible invasion of Canada. Harrison's Trail followed very closely the Scioto Trail. This Trail was burned by Native Americans in Ohio from the confluence of the Scioto and Ohio Rivers at Portsmouth, Ohio all the way north to Lake Erie at Sandusky, Ohio.
At the conclusion of the War of 1812, Harrison's Trail became an important stage route in Ohio. And, it was upon this stage coach route that the village of McCutchenville was founded in the early 1800s. One of the first buildings erected in this village was the Overland Inn. It was built in 1829 by Colonel Joseph McCutchen. A famous visitor to this inn was author Charles Dickens.
Over the years, the Overland Inn has served as a hotel, a stage coach stop and finally an apartment building. In 1964, the Wyandot County Historical Society purchased the property and began a lengthy restoration process. After three years, the original restoration was complete and the Wyandot County Historical Society dedicated the Overland Hotel as a historic stage coach museum. In 2002, a redecoration project was begun. This project soon turned into another restoration project that lasted for four years. The Inn was rededicated in 2007.

Unionville Center, Ohio
Unionville Center was originally founded as Unionville. The name was changed upon application for a post office as there was already a Unionville in Ohio.
Unionville Center
This village was called Unionville in its earliest days. The town was built upon land originally owned by Benjamin Cutler. Mr. Cutler built a house on the site years before the organization of Unionville. He also maintained a small country store. The Darby Seceder Church was formed in the area in 1824. It would later be known as the Unionville United Presbyterian Church. Around 1835 this congregation built their first church building. This building was used until a larger building was built between 1856 to 1857. John and Frederick Sager built a saw mill on Big Darby Creek, near the village site, in 1835. The village was platted on February 8, 1847 by Union County Surveyor, William B. Irwin, originally containing 15 lots and 2 streets. On May 11, 1852 Charles Warren Fairbanks was born near Unionville Center. He would later become the Vice President of the United States, serving under Theodore Roosevelt. The Fairbanks Local School District would later be named to honor this man. The Methodist Church at Unionville, first organized in the 1820s, built a church building in the village between 1856 and 1858. The village was officially recognized on March 3, 1879 by the county government, with the official name being Unionville Center. Upon its organization, there were over 200 residents of the village. The first village elections were held in 1879, with F. N. Mattoon elected first mayor. This town once supported a tannery, two sawmills, a flour mill, a school, and a tile factory.
The Darby Rural School District was chartered in 1915. A substantial brick building was built by this district in 1925. The school district was consolidated with the Chuckery School district in 1937. This district was known as Chuckery-Darby School, and it was eventually consolidated into the Fairbanks Local School District.

Allen Center, Union County, Ohio
Allen Center's first business was an ashery, a few years prior to Joel Eaton's purchase of five acres of land between 1848-49. This tract of land was platted into a few lots that would comprise the town. A US post office was was established in February of 1851, and Reuben Foote was the postmaster. The Allen Center Baptist Church was formed in 1854. The congregation built a frame church building in 1872. The church congregation still exists today. Barnet Bennet established a general store in a room of his two story house in 1862. He sold his business to Jacob Painter by about 1865, who eventually sold out all his store stock by 1875. The post office ceased operation at the start of the Civil War. In 1863, the Allen Center Protestant Methodist Church was organized. The congregation also built a small log building for worship in the same year. By 1875 the congregation was disbanded, and the church property was sold. Today the Allen Center Baptist Church remains in the community. The village is also home to the Allen Township Hall.
The first school session held in Allen Township was probably held in the winter of 1829-1830. This school session was taught by Wilson Reed in an abandoned cabin near Buck Run in the southeastern part of the township. By 1883 there were ten sub districts in Allen Township, each being held in a one room schoolhouse. These schools were Henpeck, Stringtown, Greenwood, Railroad, Little Red Schoolhouse, Buck Run, Allen Center, Connolly, Pottersburg, and one Unknown.
In 1924 the Allen Township Rural School district was chartered. The building that housed this school was erected in Allen Center in 1912. This school district became a part of the Marysville School District in 1949.

Richwood, Ohio
The village was incorporated on March 6, 1855. Charles Rosette was elected the first mayor in the same year, winning reelection in 1856 and 1857. The village government was inactive for a period of time after that. The village government was reestablished by 1868, and it has remain active since that time.
The first bank of this town was founded in 1866 by J. M. Davids and G. Allen, however it was only in existence for approximately a year. The Bank of Richwood was organized in 1867. The Richwood Gazette was established on August 16, 1872 by J. H. Vaughan and W. H. Nicholson. Mr. Vaughan served as the first editor of this newspaper. The Richwood Fire Department was incorpoorated in 1875. W. W. Kile served as the first chief of the fire department. A second newspaper made its debut in Richwood in 1882. It was called the Richwood Reporter.
