On this day in 1892, GE - the General Electric Company was formed.

On this day in 1896, the I Olympiad - the first modern day Olympics held its closing ceremony in Athens, Greece.

On this day in 1947, Jackie Robinson made his debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

On this day in 1955, Ray Kroc opened a McDonalds franchise in Des Plaines, Illinois. This was not the founding of the company, but it marked the beginning of the company as we know it today.

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1891, it was noted that three tramps passed through Chuckery claiming that they were miners.
