Can you tell me where to find Homer?

Many of the roads in Union County, Ohio are named for communities and villages that no longer exist. I thought I knew quite a bit about Union County history, but I was wrong. Imagine my surprise when I found out that there used to be a village on Homer Road.

Homer, Ohio
Homer was surveyed in October 1834 by Levi Phelps, Union County Surveyor. Mr. Phelps surveyed this village for Elisha Reynolds. This survey was duly recorded on November 1, 1834 in the Union County Recorder's Office. And, the town grew fast! Within a few years there were numerous houses, a sawmill, a cheese factory, a general store, a blacksmith shop, a cabinet shop, a woolen carding mill, a furniture factory, and a wagon/carriage shop. By 1855, the town had found itself important in the commerce of Union County.

But, in 1855, the town was handed its death sentence. A railroad was built three miles from Homer. Businesses and families left the village. Many people took their homes and businesses with them! And, by 1880 there was little more left than a few houses and a couple of abandoned stores. Most of the originally surveyed townsite has been returned to farm use. Homer was located at the intersection of State Routes 4 and 36 at Homer Road in Union Township.

But over the years it became neccessary to transport the high school students to the Jerome Rural School in New California. The Kitchen Aid Experience

For several years I have wanted to own a Kitchen Aid mixer. And, before you think I am writing a paid endorsement, I want to tell you that this piece is strictly about the history of this product. In 2008 I read an article in a Farm Bureau publication about historic Greenville, Ohio. One of the places mentioned to visit was the Kitchen Aid Experience Store. And, from that day on I HAD to have a Kitchen Aid Mixer. Little did I know that I would find a rich history in the basement of the store that is worth sharing.

"THE KITCHEN AID EXPERIENCE"

The Kitchen Aid Mixer was developed by the Hobart Corporation in Troy, Ohio. The precursor to the home mixer was designed as an 80 quart capacity mixer by engineer Herbert Johnston. So impressed with this mixer was the US Navy, that this became standard equipment on three battleships - the Tennessee, the California, and the South Carolina. The Hobart Corporation decided to design a smaller version of this mixer for home use. But, the drums of war summoned the United States into World War I, and this concept was put on hold.

In 1919, the H-5 stand mixer was developed. This mixer also had a spot for attachments that could do other cooking preparation besides mixing. Attachments made today will fit the original H-5. And, attachments made all those years ago will fit the current Kitchen Aid mixers that are in production.

These stand mixers were not called Kitchen Aids. They were simply Hobart Stand Mixers. But, upon testing the product in Troy, Ohio, one house wife was quoted to say, "I don’t care what you call it, but I know it’s the best kitchen aid I have ever had!” And, thus a brand was born.

Through the Roaring Twenties, a force of women went door-to-door selling Kitchen Aid mixers. Soon the model G was developed as Americans began to move into smaller homes. 20000 Model G mixers were sold in just three years!

In 1936 Kitchen Aid sought to modernize the design of its mixer once again. Egmont Arens, an nationally acclaimed industrial designer, was hired to design a modern Kitchen Aid mixer. And, this design remains the same to this day. At this same time, production of Kitchen Aid mixers was moved to Dayton, Ohio. The new design was released in 1941, just prior to the US entering WWII.

During WWII, the Dayton Kitchen Aid plant manufactured munitions for the war, putting production of its mixers on hold. Upon the end of WWII, Kitchen Aid production was moved to Greenville, Ohio where it remains today.

By 1955, Kitchen Aid mixers were available in a variety of colors including pink, yellow, green, chrome, and copper. The K4A began production in 1962. In 1970 wheat and avocado are added to the color line-up. By 1986, the Kitchen Aid line had expanded to include large appliances such as ranges and refrigerators.

1986 also marked the year that the Hobart Corporation sold the Kitchen Aid line to Whirlpool. In 1992, blenders were added to the Kitchen Aid product line. And, in 1995, blue and red were added to the color line-up. The professional - 6 mixer was introduced in 2000.

Milford Center, Ohio

Darby Ford
Darby Ford was the name of a community that arose at the site of present day Milford Center in the early 1800s. Settlers to the area constructed a ford across Darby Creek near the current site of the State Route 4 bridge. After George Reed constructed a mill near this site, the area became known as Mill Ford.

Flint
This is the name that the Milford Center post office was known by in the 1860s.

Milford
This is the precursor to Milford Centre. The word Centre was added to the town's name when the village was lobbying to become the county seat for Union County.

Milford Center
The town of Milford Center has the distinction of being one of the oldest communities in what is now Union County. It is also the oldest town site in the county. The area was called Darby Ford for a while after early settlers cleared trees in the area to create a ford across the creek. This area is where the current State Route 4 bridge crosses the Big Darby Creek in Milford Center today. The area was later called Mill Ford, after George Reed erected the first mill in the area. The town of Milford was platted and recorded in 1816 for George Reed. The original survey of the site called for 40 lots in the village. In 1820, Milford Center became the first county seat of Union County when a small log court house was built here. However the county seat was moved by 1822. The US post office in the village was established, as Milford Center, in 1823 with David Burnham serving as the first postmaster. In 1831 the Methodist Episcopal Church at Milford was established. Their first house of worship was erected in the village in 1835. The Presbyterian Church at Milford was established in 1808 as the Upper Liberty Presbyterian Church. This church was located on present day Orchard Road near the site of the Woods-Reed Cemetery. This congregation erected a brick church structure in Milford in 1834. The village was incorporated as Milford Center on March 3, 1853. Over the next several years the town ceased to operate as an incorporated town, and the village was reincorporated on August 4, 1866. By 1882 Milford Center had approximately 500 residents. At one time the village supported a school, three general stores, four groceries, two drug stores, one hardware store, one grist mill, one saw mill, one carriage factory, two blacksmiths, two livery stables, one grain warehouse, two shoe shops, two hotels, two barber shops, and four churches. This town also once boasted its own newspaper, The Ohioan. Today Milford Center is still home to a school district. The Fairbanks Local School District calls Milford Center and the surrounding area its home. The town also still maintains a US Post office with a zipcode of 43045. There are numerous churches in the area. And there are several businesses located in the village, including a convenience store/gas station and a pizza shop.

A small one room schoolhouse was erected in the village prior to 1835. A large school house was erected in the village between 1880-1881. This school contained four rooms and cost approximately $10,000 to build. Prior to this, neighborhood one room schools served the area. This school district later consolidated with the Irwin School District to form the Union Rural School District. In later years, this school would consolidate with the Chuckery-Darby School District and the Watkins School District to form the Fairbanks Local School District.

Loyal through the Toughest of Times

Have you ever thought about what it means to protect and defend the United States? I often lie awake at night, unable to sleep because I am thinking about the blessings I have. I live in a "free" nation. I am able to worship anyway I choose. I have a husband and daughters who love me. And, I have the comforts and protection of a sturdy home. I have all of this because of the United States military that defends my rights each and every day. Every person in a military uniform stands watch over my life.

Several years ago I worked on a very humbling project. I was granted the honor of talking with military families in Union County, Ohio. Each family has a very special place in my heart. They allowed me to meet with them to discuss loved ones who went off to war. Many of these families never saw their loved ones again. But, all of these families opened doors to their lives and let me in. So, today I continue to salute the military heroes of Union County. Today I salute Sergeant Charles G. Riedmiller. He was one of the fortunate because he was able to come home.

SERGEANT CHARLES G. RIEDMILLER - The Bataan Death March

Charles G. Riedmiller was born on May 13, 1917 near Milford Center, Ohio. He was born to Fred and Catherine Riedmiller. AS a child, he attended the township schools in Union Township, graudatint from Union Local High School in 1935. He joined the United States Army on January 30, 1941. Note, he joined the United States Army several months before the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese.

Charles Riedmiller was a member of Company C in the 192nd Armored Tank Battalion. He was initially stationed at Camp Polk in Louisiana. But, prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, his battalion went to the Philippines. His battalion was on the Bataan Peninsula when Pearl Harbor was attacked. His battalion fought the Japanese from December 7, 1941 until April 9 1942 in an attempt to keep the area from Japanese control. He was captured by Japanese forces, and from April 10 to April 15, 1942 he was a part of the Bataan Death March. He survived this ordeal. And, then spent the next seven months in POW camps doing forced labor.

Fortunately, Sergeant Charles G. Riedmiller survived WWII. He was released to American Forces on November 26, 1942. He continued serving in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in May of 1946. While serving in the United States Army, Sergeant Riedmiller received the Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, a Distinguished Unit Citation, and three Presidential Unit Citations.

Farewell

"Farewell ye plains of Darby, with all your scenes so gay;
For shortly I must leave you and hasten far away;
Though ever is my absence, with a consciousness of worth;
I'll claim you as the land that gave my being birth."

This poem was found in the pocket of a fallen Union County, Ohio soldier, Ransom Reed, after he was killed in battle during the American Civil War. Below is his story.

RANSOM REED - "He Gave All"

Ransom Reed was the son of William and Mary (Amrine) Reed. He was born on April 29, 1940 in the Amrine Settlement, a neighborhood north of Marysville, Ohio in Union County. He went off to fight in the Civil War with many of his friends and relatives in early 1861. And, he was the first from Union County to die in battle. He was killed during the Battle of Carnifax Ferry in West Virginia. A relative, Edwin Turner, went to West Virginia and brought Reed's body back to Union County, where he was interred in the Amrine Cemetery. Ransom Reed's poem was read at his burial. In later years, the Marysville post of the GAR - Grand Army of the Republic, was named in Ransom Reed's honor. There is also a large memorial stained glass window in the Marysville First United Methodist Church that was dedicated in Ransom Reed's honor and memory.

Yes, some did give all. Thank you, Mr. Reed, for protecting this country in time of battle. I salute you today.

From CURRY CADETS to THE LEGENDARY RAINBOW DIVISION

On July 18, 1877, a company of the Ohio National Guard was established at Marysville, Ohio. William L. Curry was elected captain of this unit. This company was assigned to the Fourteenth Regiment of the Ohio National Guard, originally as Company E. The Company was later changed to Company D, and took the name the Curry Cadets in honor of Captain W. L. Curry.

In its early years, this unit was called on primarily for ceremonial duties. On January 14, 1878 the unit was present for the inauguration of Ohio Governor R. M. Bishop. On August 11, 1880, the Curry Cadets were on hand to help patrol a National Reunion of the GAR. While at this reunion, the Curry Cadets were reviewed by President Rutherford B. Hayes and General William Tecumseh Sherman. And, in October of 1881, the Curry Cadets were placed on guard duty for the funeral of President James A. Garfield.

On April 25, 1898, Company D of the Ohio National Guard was called to active duty during the Spanish-American War. It was officially activated as Company E. Upon returning to the United States at the end of the war, the unit was ordered to Washington, D. C. where it was reviewed by President William McKinley. The unit was mustered out on January 20, 1899.

In May of 1900, the Curry Cadets were reorganized into Company E of the Ohio Fourth Infantry. In May of 1916 the unit was stationed on the US-Mexican border. It remained here until February 16, 1917.

At the start of the Great War, World War I, Company E of the Fourth Ohio Infantry became the 166th US Infantry. And, this was one of four unites that comprised the 42nd Division of the United States Army. This was the legendary Rainbow Division. The Rainbow Division was commanded for a period of time during WWI by General Douglas MacArthur. The division took part in four major in France during this period. It was also under the control of French commanders at various points, as well.

Some of Union County's notable sons were a part of this company. They include Dr. Angus MacIvor, Robert S. Beightler, Herman Doellinger, and Frank Henderson. In fact, this was where General Robert S. Beightler started his military career.

Veterans Day

As we pause to remember our veterans today, do we really know why we celebrate this day? Do we know the history of the day? Veterans day was formerly known as Armistice Day, honoring the official end of World War I on November 11, 1918. Armistice Day was officially declared a federal holiday in 1938. In 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all veterans. Veterans Day is different from Memorial Day in that it honors all members of the United States military in both wartime and in peace. And, it is a day to remember the dead veterans and to honor and thank those veterans who are still among us.

So, today, when you see a veteran walking down the street, stop and say thank you. Because, well because without them would we even have the privilege of calling ourselves Americans?

Thank you to all of the veterans! God Bless you! Thank you, Grandpa Powers! Thank you, Great-Grandpa Miller. Your service has not gone unnoticed.

The lost village of North Liberty

Have you ever driven into Plain City, Ohio via US Route 42? If you come from the north on a southerly course you will pass by a large granite rock on the north bank of the Big Darby Creek before you reach the town of Plain City. For years I saw this rock nearly every time my family travelled into Plain City. As a child I often wondered what the plaque on the rock said. By late 2004, I developed a strong interest in local history. And, so one day I stopped to take a picture of the rock. And, this is what plaque on the rock says, "Joshua Ewing 1765-1821 First White Settler in Union County." There is a lot to this story, but I will try to simplify this to include just basic facts.

First, it should be noted that pioneer, Jonathan Alder was the first white man in the present-day Plain City area. He was captured by Indians as a young boy and brought to the Darby Creek area. Prior to his return to Virginia to find his biological family in the late 1790s, he had spent all of his time with the Indians in present-day Union County. Upon his return to Ohio, he took up residence in Madison County, south of present-day Plain City. So, Jonathan Alder was the first white man in the area, but he was not considered a permanent resident until his return from Virginia.

Now, on to the Ewing family and Lucas Sullivant. . . It is probably best if I introduce Lucas Sullivant. Lucas Sullivant was a prominent surveyor in the Ohio Country in the late 1700s and early 1800s. He was the surveyor who first platted Franklinton, the original settlement at the location of present-day Columbus, Ohio. In 1797, Sullivant platted North Liberty on the north bank of the Big Darby Creek.

In 1798, James and Joshua Ewing arrived in the area, purchasing lots in North Liberty. They both erected cabins, setting up households in this village. James was married and lived whith his wife, the former Margaret Scott. Joshua was unmarried, but brought with him their widow mother, Cynthia. Joshua also brought two sisters and a nephew to the area, Betsy Ewing, the widow Mrs. Eunice Donaldson, and Ewing Donaldson. And so this family became the first permanent settlers of present-day Union County.

Unfortunately, Lucas Sullivant never did more for North Liberty that to survey its lots. He put forth more effort in establishing the village of Franklinton on the banks of the Scioto River. And, so the Ewing family eventually moved out of the village onto farmsteads.

But, before it was abandoned, North Liberty was the site of a pioneer Presbyterian Church. This church was established in 1799. The Reverend Archibald Steele was the pastor of the North Liberty Presbyterian Church. And, the members of this church consisted of the Ewing Family.

After abandoning North Liberty, the Ewing family remained pillars of the Union County area. Joshua Ewing was a surveyor in his own rite, and spent a considerable amount of time surveying land in the central Ohio area. He also served as the first Auditor of Union County. He served in this office until the time of his death in 1822.

James Ewing opened the first general store in the area. He also served as the first postmaster of the Darby Creek Post, a pioneer precursor to the Plain City, Ohio Post Office. This post office was located on the Post Road south of the Big Darby Creek. And, James Ewing was the first Sheriff of Union County, Ohio. He served as Sheriff from 1820-1823.

And, so it was with many pioneer towns. Many simply ceased to exist as its citizens found "better" locations at which to live. Though, interestingly enough, North Liberty may have survived if Lucas Sullivant would have brought other settlers to the village.

The Artist from Irwin

Lately I have developed a fascination for the bronze historical markers located all over Ohio. I am always excited to find a new marker that shares a new historical tidbit. Yesterday, I found two markers in Mechaniscburg. And, today I have decided to do a little research on artist James Roy Hopkins.

JAMES ROY HOPKINS
James Roy Hopkins was born on May 17, 1877 in the small village of Irwin. This little village is in the southwestern part of Union County, Ohio. He was the son of Asa George Hopkins and Nettie Miller Hopkins.

As a boy, he attended school in neighboring Mechanicsburg, Ohio, where he graduated in 1895. He also acquired a love of art from his mother, who dabbled in water colors. Upon graduating from highschool, James enrolled in classes at the Ohio State University with the intent of becoming an electrical engineer. He soon realized that this was not his life calling and transferred to the Columbus Art School. After his graduation from the Columbus Art School, James went to Art Institute of Cincinnati, where he studied under Frank Duveneck.

James R. Hopkins remained at the Art Institute of Cincinnati for two years. He then travelled to New York City where he worked as a medical illustrator. He then spent time in Paris, enrolling in the Academy Colarossi. He also opened his own studio. While in Paris, he became personally acquainted with Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, and Pierre Renoir.

It was during his time in Paris, that Hopkins married Edna Boies, a woman he had met at the Art Institute of Cincinnati. She was a noted artist in her own right, choosing wood-block print as her medium. Together, they travelled the world.

When James and Edna Hopkins returned to the US, James spent a period of time teaching at the Art Institute of Cincinnati. And, then he was became chairman of the Department of Fine Arts at Ohio State University. He served at OSU until 1947.

James Roy Hopkins was also an officer in the United States Army. It was in this capacity that he taught students how to camouflage Army equipment.

James Roy Hopkins spent his retirement years at his familiy's farm, Darbyland. He died on this farm on January 23, 1969. His most noted works often depicted folk life in the Appalachian and Cumberland Mountains.

Ohio History Marker - Joseph E. Wing

Yesterday, I came home from Mechanicsburg via Rosedale Road. I usually take State Route 4. But, I was looking for a change of scenery. I soon came across an Ohio History Marker that honored Joseph E. Wing. I had seen this sign before, but I had never taken the time to find out who Joseph E. Wing was. So, I vowed to myself that I would find out more as soon as I got home.

Joseph E. Wing

Joseph E. Wing was born on September 14, 1861. He was raised on Woodland Farms near Mechanicsburg, Ohio. He spent time working on a cattle ranch in Utah. This proved to be life-shaping for him, as this is where he acquired his interest in alfalfa as a hay source for livestock.

Wing was one of the first farmers east of the Mississippi River to grow alfalfa as a forage/hay crop for livestock. And, once he found it to be a successful crop on his own farm, he began to spread the word, first to farmers around Champaign County, and then to farmers around the state of Ohio. In 1913 he hosted an "Alfalfa Picnic" on his farm that attracted of 3,500 people, including the Governor James M. Cox.

For his work with alfalfa, Joseph E. WIng was posthumously inducted into the Ohio Agriculture Hall of Fame in the 1940s. His farm remains in the Wing Family today. Over the course of his life, he also contributed to many agriculture publications both in Ohio and across the United States.

Where is Irwin, Ohio?

There is a coffee shop at my church - St. Paul Lutheran Church. This is in the tiny little hamlet of Chuckery, Ohio. And, though not the subject of my story, this little coffee shop is the reason that I have set out today to learn more about Irwin, Ohio. I drive through Irwin every time I go into Mechanicsburg to buy more coffee for the St. Paul - HeBrews Coffee Shop.

Irwin, Ohio

Irwin, Ohio is a small village in the southwest corner of Union Township in Union County, Ohio. This small village is located at the intersection of State Routes 161 and 4. There is a US Post Office located in this village with a zipcode of 43029. However, the rumor of closing this office and transferring mail delivery to Mechansicsburg, Ohio is currently the talk of the town.

Irwin was founded by John Irwin in 1808. It was first called Irwin Station as a stop on the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis Railroad. The village is not and never has been incorporated. It is a platted village, but the plat has never been recorded in the Union County offices. A post office was first established in the village on May 15, 1858. David Clements served as the first postmaster. At its height of prosperity, Irwin boasted a Methodist Church, a post office, a sawmill, a grain elevator, a blacksmith, a grocer, a doctor, a school, and a shoe shop. Today nearly all that remain are houses, a post office, and the quaint Caldwell Memorial United Methodist Church.

There is more to Irwin's importance in Ohio agriculture. But, my time is short today. The story of Irwin's place in Ohio agriculture will have to wait until another day.

The First Courthouse of Union County, Ohio

The first Union County Courthouse was located in Milford Center, Union County's first seat of justice. This first courthouse was a tiny log structure. This courthouse was used from May 1, 1820 until November of 1822. This log courthouse remained in Milford Center until 1907 when it was moved to the Union County Fairgrounds in Marysville. The building eventually deteriorated to a point that it could no longer be salvaged in spite of efforts to save it by the local DAR chapter. The original log court house had to be tore down. A replica of this first Union County Courthouse has been constructed in Milford Center.

One Hundred-Fifty Year Anniversary of the American Civil War

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War. Many commemorative events have been held. Many more are planned. In Union County, a lot of men went off to serve in this war. Many returned home after the war. Many more did not. Today I find it fitting to mention Norton Parker Chipman from Milford Center, Ohio. In 2007, I wrote a piece about him for a MILITARY REMEMBRANCE Calendar that was published by the Union County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society. Below is his story.

NORTON PARKER CHIPMAN - FROM SMALL TOWN BOY TO NATIONAL FIGURE

Norton Parker Chipman was born in Milford Center, Ohio on March 7, 1834 to Norman and Sarah Chipman. Norman Chipman was proprietor of a hotel in the village, and he was also active in the Union Township government.

In his early years, Norton Chipman attended schools in Union Township, Union County, Ohio. And, in 1859, he graduated from the Cincinnati Law School, presently a part of the University of Cincinnati. He then moved out to Iowa, where the rest of the Chipman family had relocated.

It was from Iowa, that Norton Chipman enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. He first served a Private in Company H of the Second Iowa Infantry. When his commanding officer, Colonel Samuel R. Curtis was promoted to the rank of general, Chipman was elected second lieutenant of his company. By the end of the Civil war he had attained the rank of brigadier general.

At the end of the Civil War, General Norton P. Chipman resigned his position in the Army and began the practice of law in Washington, D. C. He also served two terms in the in the United States Congress as the only representative from the District of Columbia.

Upon the end of his second term in Congress, Chipman relocated to California, where he once again took up the practice of law. Over the course of his law career, he was affiliated with the Republican Party. He also rose to serve as the commissioner of the California Supreme Court.

Norton Parker Chipman is credited as a co-founder of the Grand Army of the Republic, a service organization for Union veterans of the American Civil War. And, it was through his work with the GAR and General John A. Logan, that he wrote an order that effectively marked the creation of Decoration Day, the precursor to Memorial Day.

Norton Parker Chipman married Mary Isabel Holmes in 1865. Two this union were born two children. Chipman died on February 1, 1924 in California.

'Tis the Season to VOTE!

Election season is upon us! Political signs have replaced Halloween fare in yards, and campaign ads echo on every radio station. So, I am revisiting a piece that I wrote for the ChuckeryOhio.com website. This piece discusses Charles W. Fairbanks, 26th Vice President of the United States. And, remember friends, please go to the polls next Tuesday and VOTE!

"The Last of the America's Log Cabin Statesmen"

Charles Warren Fairbanks was born on May 11, 1852 in a log cabin near Unionville
Center in Union County, Ohio to Loriston Monroe and Mary Adelaide Smith Fairbanks.
His father was a wagon maker. Charles Fairbanks was one of ten children. And, as a child,
he attended the local schools in Darby Township, Union County, Ohio.

After grade school, he attended Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. While there he was the co-editor of the school newspaper. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in
1872. He would later marry his co-editor, Cornelia Cole on October 6, 1874 in
Marysville, Ohio. Five children were born to this union. They were Adelaide, Warren,
Frederick, Richard, and Robert.

His first job after college was with the Associated Press in 1872. He covered political
rallies supporting Horace Greeley in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania during the 1872
Presidential Election. And the seed of his political interests was planted.

Charles and Cornelia Fairbanks then moved to Cleveland, Ohio. While in Cleveland,
Charles attended law school. He was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1874. In this same
year, the young Fairbanks couple moved to Indianapolis, Indiana.

Charles W. Fairbanks' first job in Indianapolis was an appointment as manager of
the bankrupt Bloomington, Indianapolis, and Western Railroad. In this capacity he
earned $5,000 a year, which was a large sum of money in the 1870s. He later moved
on to serve a legal counsel for the Ohio and Chesapeake Railroad. In 1877 he
successfully prosecuted striking railroaders, drawing attention to himself from the
Indiana Republican Party.

In subsequent years, Fairbanks worked tirelessly to rebuild the Republican Party in
Indiana. He was successful in this endeavor due to his very strong financial standing
in the Indianapolis community and through his many business contacts that he had
acquired through his railroad work. The Indiana Republican Party rewarded Charles
Fairbanks with a nomination to the US Senate in 1893. However, Fairbanks was not
elected. In 1896, Fairbanks was a strong supporter of William McKinley, even
speaking on his behalf as the Keynote speaker at the Republican National Convention.
This propelled Fairbanks into the national political spotlight. And, he was elected to
the US Senate in 1896.

As a Senator from Indiana, Charles W. Fairbanks, was appointed to the British Joint
High Commission that was to decide the dividing line between Canada and the
Alaskan Territory. He has been quoted as saying, "I am opposed to the yielding of an
inch of United States Territory." His resolve in this issue drew admiration from the
local people in Alaska, and they named a community Fairbanks. This small
community grew into one of the largest cities in Alaska.

In 1900, some members of the Republican Party tried to persuade Fairbanks to
accept the nomination to the office of Vice President. But, Fairbanks instead opted to
remain a US Senator. He was also now heavily involved in the newspaper business in
Indianapolis. He had a paper, the Indianapolis News. In 1901, this paper purchased
the Indianapolis Journal. Fairbanks also thought he could win the Republican
Presidential nomination in 1905. But, in 1901, William McKinley was assassinated.
Vice President Theodore Roosevelt became the President, and he rather liked the
office. He was able to gain the support necessary to gain the Republican Nomination
for President in 1905. So, Fairbanks accepted the Vice Presidential nomination.

Charles W. Fairbanks served as the twenty sixth Vice President of the United States
under the Presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. His term lasted from 1905 to 1908. In
1908, when Roosevelt opted not to seek reelection, instead supporting William
Howard Taft, Fairbanks went back to practicing law in Indianapolis.

In 1912, Charles Fairbanks returned to the political arena to help develop a platform
for the Republican Party. In 1913, his wife Cornelia died. By 1916, he was ready to try
again for the Presidential nomination. While he failed in this attempt, he was able to
gain the Vice Presidential nomination under Charles Evans Hughes. The election was
close in 1916, but Hughes and Fairbanks lost the election to the Democratic
incumbents, Woodrow Wilson and Thomas Marshall.

Charles W. Fairbanks once again returned to Indianapolis, Indiana to practice law.
But, by 1917, his health began to fail. He died in Indianapolis on June 4, 1918 and
was buried in the Crown Hill Cemetery.

The Bridge Builder of Union County

Last Friday, an Ohio History Marker at the Culbertson Covered Bridge on Winget Road in Union County, Ohio was dedicated. So, today I am "borrowing" this piece I wrote about R. L. Partridge and posted to the Chuckery, Ohio website. Enjoy!

REUBEN L. PARTRIDGE

Reuben L. Partridge was born on September 10, 1823 in Essex County, New York to
Cyrus and Lucina Partridge. He was one of four children.

The family was counted among pioneer familes in Franklin County, Ohio, where they
moved prior to 1836. When Reuben's father died in 1836, his mother moved the
family to Marysville, Ohio where her son from an earlier marriage lived. This older son
was Rowland Lee, a local wagon maker. Young Reuben soon learned this trade
from his older half-brother. He remained a wagon maker for over eight years. He
then chose to follow the carpenter's trade.

Reuben Partridge married Maria Wolford in late 1846. At the time of her death, Maria
was the oldest living, native-born, Marysville citizen. To this union were born six
children Asenath, A. Jennette (Vosburg), Frances L. (Sager), Flora L., Catherine O.,
and Lillian.

In 1855, Partridge accepted his first contract to build the first self supporting bridge in
Union County. By 1866, Partridge was building bridges full time. In 1872, he
received a patent for his truss design. By 1883, Partridge had built over 125 bridges,
most of them were covered, wooden bridges following his patented design. He also
built some iron bridges. Most of the bridges he built were in Union County. He also
built some bridges in the surrounding counties.

Reuben L. Partridge died from complications due to a broken leg that resulted from a
fall from the Alsaugh Bridge over Blues Creek. He was overseeing repairs to this bridge that was north of Marysville at the time of his fall. He died in July of 1900.

Over the course of his life, Partridge served on the Marysville CIty Council, as the Paris
Township Clerk, and as a Paris Township Trustee. He was also a part of the first
militia formed in Union County, though he never served in the US military. He also
was very active in raising money and support for service groups from Union County
who served in both the Mexican War and the Civil War.

There are four Partridge covered bridges remaining in Union County in 2007. These
bridges include the Bigelow Covered Bridge, the Culbertson Covered Bridge, the
Pottersburg Covered Bridge, and the Spain Creek Covered Bridge. Until 1993, there
were five Partridge covered bridges in Union County. But, unfortunately, the Reed
Covered Bridge fell into Big Darby Creek in August of 1993.

The only Partridge Bridge remaining that was not built in Union County is the
Bergstresser Covered Bridge. This bridge is also known as the Dietz Bridge. This
bridge is located over the Little Walnut Creek near Canal Winchester.

More on the elder Ebenezer Zane

As promised, I am returning to the topic of Ebenezer Zane - the elder. This distinction is used to ease confusion between Ebenezer Zane (1747-1811) and his nephew of the same name.

Ebenezer Zane was the second child of William Zane of Virginia. With two of his brothers, Silas and Jonathan, Ebenezer Zane founded the first settlement at what is now Wheeling, West Virginia. Ebenezer also served in the British Military prior to the Revolutionary War. He was in Fort Henry when his father was wounded and his sister, Betty Zane, ran out of the fort to retrieve munitions from the family's cabin. Ebenezer also served in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War.

After the war, in 1796, Ebenezer Zane petitioned Congress for permission and funds to create a road through the Northwest Territory. In return, Zane requested land near the Scioto, Muskingum, and Hocking Rivers. So, from 1796 to 1797 Zane worked on his road. It began in Wheeling, Virginia (note: before it was West Virginia) and ended in Maysville, Kentucky. This road frequently followed old Indian Trails, and in most places, this road was not suitable for travel by wagon. The road would become known as Zane's Trace. Between 1825 and 1830, the part of the road between Wheeling and Zanesville was rebuilt for inclusion in the "new" National Road. The National Road was later superseded by US Route 40.

The town of Zanesville was named for Ebenezer Zane and is situated on a track of land that was deeded to his brother, Jonathan, and son-in-law, John McIntire. The town was originally platted in 1799 as Westbourne. But, the name was later changed to Zanesville by a postmaster.

And, so this is the legacy of Ebenzer Zane, the elder. While he was a national figure, those outside of Ohio and West Virginia probably have no idea who he was.
