On this day in 1775, the Second Continental Congress created the United States Marine Corps.

On this day in 1903, Mary Anderson patented the windshield wiper.

On this day in 1954, Ellis Island closed. The Immigration Center on Ellis Island opened on January 2, 1892. Over the course of over sixty years over 12 million immigrants passed through its doors on their way to the great American Dream.

On this day in 1969, the children's television show SESAME STREET debutted.

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1897, it was reported that the Methodist Church was being reroofed. It is also reported that the general store has recently opened.
