Today in History - November 11

On this day in 1620, the Mayflower Compact was signed on Cape Cod. This was the first document to set forth a government for the Plymouth Colony.

On this day in 1839, the Virginia Military Institute was founded in Virginia.

On this day in 1864, General William Tecumseh Sherman burned Atlanta and began his MARCH TO THE SEA.

On this day in 1918, the Armistice Agreement was signed by Germany, marking the official end to World War I. The official end came on the eleventh hour on the eleventh day in the eleventh month. This marked the start of the American Veterans Day tradition.

On this day in 1921, President Warren G. Harding dedicated the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery.

On this day in 1926, famed Route 66 was created.

On this day in 1940, a blizzard took the American Midwest by surprise in a event referred to as the Armistice Day Blizzard. Over one hundred people died as a result.

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1885, it was reported that many of the area school districts are opening their winter school sessions today.

Also, in 1891, Jake Scheiderer reported that the 11 o'clock west bound train struck and killed five head of his cattle near Unionville Center.

  1. I find the entry about Jake's cows most interesting. Jake was my gr.gr. grandfather.
    The herd was eventually taken care of by Jake's son, Albert. It was moved south of Plain City in the 40s by Albert's son Maurice (Mose), and to Monroe County Ohio in '77 by Mose's son Albert Jacob (Jake - my dad). "Old" Jake's gr.gr. grandson, Albert Jacob (Al) is now milking the Jersey herd originally founded by Jake.
