On this day in 1778, Captain James Cook became the first European to set foot on Maui.

On this day in 1789, a national Thanksgiving Day was observed in the US. This was a recommendation from President George Washington and approved by Congress.

On this day in 1842, the University of Notre Dame was founded.

On this day in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation making the final Thursday of November to be Thanksgiving each year.

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1894, it was reported that Bertha Congrove is recovering from typhoid fever.
