On this day in 1776, Hessian soldiers captured Fort Washington during the American Revolutionary War.

On this day in 1907, the Oklahoma Territory and the Indian Territory united to become the 46th state.

On this day in 1914, the United States Federal Reserve Bank opened.

On this day in 1940, the Royal Air Force bombs Hamburg in retaliation for the destruction of Coventry, England.

On this day in 1973, President Richard M. Nixon signed the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Authorization Act which in turn allowed the Alaska pipeline to be built.

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1893, it was reported that Dick Tway is building a large barn on his farm, three miles west of Chuckery.
