On this day in 1682, explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle discovered the mouth of the Mississippi River. He claimed the area for France and named it Louisiana in honor of the king of France.

On this day in 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appamatox Courthouse, Virginia.

On this day in 1867, the US Senate ratified a treaty with Russia that authorized the purchase of Alaska.

On this day in 1965 the Astrodome opened and the first indoor baseball game was played.

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1896, it was reported that Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gaulke recently welcomed a baby girl to their family.
