On this day in 1773, the hymn that became known as Amazing Grace was played for the first time in Olney, England.

On this day in 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation took affect in the Confederate States.

On this day in 1890, the very first Tournament of Roses Parade was held in Pasadena, California. In the early years, the actual Tournament of Roses consisted of races and polo games. The first Rose Bowl Game was not held until 1902, and it was a match between Michigan and California.

On this day in 1934, Alcatraz Island became a US federal prison.

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1887, D. Lombard and family spent New Years Day with Cal Dillow.
