On this day in 1649, Charles I of England was beheaded.

On this day in 1790, the first boat designed specifically as a life raft was tested on the River Tyne.

On this day in 1835, Richard Lawrence attempted to assassinate President Andrew Jackson, but he was unsuccessful. This was the first recorded assassination attempt on a sitting US President.

On this day in 1862, the US Navy launched its first ironclad vessel, the USS Monitor.

On this day in 1933, Adolf Hitler was sworn in as chancellor of Germany.

On this day in 1969, the Beatles preformed their last public concert - an impromptu performance on the roof of Apple Records in London. London police broke up the concert.

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1892, it was reported that Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Magill have visitors this week.
