On this day in 1851, Northwestern University in Illinois was chartered.

On this day in 1902, the Carnegie Institute was founded with a $10 million contribution from Andrew Carnegie.

On this day in 1915, the United States Coast Guard was created by Congress.

On this day in 1956, Elvis Presley made his first appearance on television in the United States.

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1892, it was reported that no services were held at Lewis Chapel last Sunday due to Reverend Mann being ill.
