On this day in 1636, the Massachusetts Bay Colony organized three militia regiments to protect the settlement from attacks by local Indians. This is recognized as the founding of the United States National Guard.

On this day in 1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee defeated Union General Ambrose E. Burnside at the Battle of Fredericksburg.

On this day in 1941, Hungary and Romania declared war on the United States.

On this day in 2000, Al Gore conceded the US Presidency to George W. Bush.

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1892, it was announced that an Oyster Supper will be held at the residence of Joel Fairbanks on December 21 for the benefit of Lewis Chapel.
