On this day in 1818, Silent Night was preformed for the first time at St. Nikolaus Church in Oberndorf, Austria.

On this day in 1826, the Egg Nog Riot took place at the United States Military Academy. This resulted in in the court-martialing of twenty cadets and one enlisted man.

On this day in 1851, the Library of Congress burned.

On this day in 1914, the Christmas Truce began. In many areas during WWI, fighting ceased and soldiers actually exchanged gifts with their enemies. Carols were sung, games were played, and the dead were jointly buried.

On this day in 1943, U. S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower was made Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces.

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1901, Reverend Knust of the Lutheran Church had a visitor from Indiana.
