Magnetic Springs, Ohio
Green Bend
The original community in the Magnetic Springs area was called Green Bend. In 1881 the name was changed to Kokosing to honor the indians. Kokosing
This is the name given to present day Magnetic Springs in 1881.
Magnet City
This is another reference to Magnetic Springs.
Magnetic SpringsMagnetic Springs grew up around the spring that was discovered on the property of J. E. Newhouse when he was digging a well to supply water to his pond. The spring was discovered in 1879. By the next year a dozen houses existed on the site. A bath house and hotel accommodations were soon built for visitors to the village. Also, by 1882 the population of the village floated between seasons from 300 to 500. The village was able to support two hotels, a bath house, two grocery stores, a hardware store, a jeweler, a billiard parlor, a meat market, a livery stable, a blacksmith shop, and a photo gallery. The town was officially incorporated in 1883. By 1903 a trolley was running between Delaware and Magnetic Springs. This line was extended to include Richwood. By 1919 the automobile had made this trolley line obsolete. In 1949 there was a mob presence in the village.
The exact date of Leesburg first school session can not be found. But, it is believed that an early school was held in a log school house by Samuel Pharis, just south of Pharisburg. Another early teacher in the township was Naomi Carney. At one time there were as many as twelve one room school houses in Leesburg Township. These school houses included the Magnetic Springs, Stringtown, Half Acre, Elliott, Styre, District Number 2, Pharisburg, Hildreth, Blackhawk, Bonnette, Bluescreek, and Beechgrove schools. The Magnetic Springs frame school house was erected in 1882 with O. C. DeGood serving as the first teacher in the village. The Magnetic Springs School pictured was erected in 1914. The consolidated Leesburg-Magnetic Springs School was organized in 1937. The school building in Magnetic Springs was used for this district.Today in History - March 25

New California, Ohio
A frame school house was built in the village in 1852. This school was known as the New California Select School or the Little Brown Schoolhouse. In 1909 a larger school was built in the village that housed 12 grades. This school received its charter in 1913. By 1913 plans were made to build a high school. This is the high school that the Jerome Special students would later attend as well. The school district was eventually absorbed by the Jonathan Alder School District.

In 1852 the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati & Indianapolis Railroad made its way through Dover township. On May 11, 1854 land was surveyed for the village of Dover near the site of the railroad. Adam Richey built the first house in the village in the fall of that same year. A harness shop was opened in the village in 1854. By the early 1880s the town boasted a population of 150 people. A sawmill was built in the village in 1881. At one time the town supported three blacksmiths, a harness shop, a grain elevator, two general stores, and two tile factories. Over time the name of this village evolved to New Dover.
The first school sessions in Dover Township were believed to have been held in long cabins on the banks of Mill Creek. At one time there eight one room school houses in the township. By 1883 Dover Township was divided into seven subdistricts. A wooden frame schoolhouse was erected in the village of New Dover in the latter part of the 19th century. This building was replaced by a two-story brick stucture in 1914 to accomodate the consolidation of all township schools at New Dover. The Dover Rural School district received its charter in 1919. The New Dover School building housed only grades 1-8 by 1948. Students were bussed to either Marysville or Ostrander. By 1957 the school district was consolidated into the Marysville Village School District. The New Dover School served as an elementary school for the Marysville School district until 1973. The New Dover building was sold to the Dover Township trustees for $1. This building was destroyed to make room for a community building in 1977. However, the Old Dover School, a smaller wood frame building, still stands in the village on US Route 36.

Census Records
Okay, I guess I need to make a confession. I was in a BAD mood the day I filled out my questionnaire for the last census. I hastily wrote that there were 8 people living at our address. I did not fill out any more information than that. And, now I am regretting this hasty response. Years from now I am sure my descendants will be talking about loony Grandma Rebekah and how she just scribbled across the census form very limited information.
My regret comes as I have spent the last few months pouring over census records. I have been following my ancestors from east to west and then back east again. Had my ancestors refused to give information on those in their families, my journey across the country through the census records may not have been possible. And, so, I apologize to the future generations of my family.
I am now anxiously awaiting the release of the 1940 US Federal Census. I have a few questions for my grandparents and great grandparents that might only be answered through the information provided in the census. What will you look for? I know what I am searching to find.

Where's Waldo?
So, today I sat to write an entry, and the question, "Where's Waldo?" kept popping into my head. I have no idea where Waldo, the person, is. But, I can tell you exactly where Waldo, Ohio is located. This small Ohio town is northwest of Delaware Lake in Marion County, Ohio on US Route 23. And, quite ironically, this is another small Ohio village that grew up on the Scioto or Harrison Trail. Locally, the trail is referred to as, "The Harrison Military Road."

The Overland Inn at McCutchenville, Ohio
Today my family traveled to the northern part of Ohio. And, on the way we passed through the village of McCutchenville. On the south side of this quaint village is an old stage coach inn from pioneer days. I immediately made a note to find out more when I got back home. This is what I have learned.
THE OVERLAND INN
It is probably best to start with the history of the Ohio State Route 53. Ohio 53 generally follows the path of the Harrison Trail trough Wyandot County in Ohio. The Harrison Trail was a trail mapped and used by General William Henry Harrison during the War of 1812. His unrealized plan was to not only use this trail to defend the Ohio frontier from Indians, but to also use this trail in a possible invasion of Canada. Harrison's Trail followed very closely the Scioto Trail. This Trail was burned by Native Americans in Ohio from the confluence of the Scioto and Ohio Rivers at Portsmouth, Ohio all the way north to Lake Erie at Sandusky, Ohio.
At the conclusion of the War of 1812, Harrison's Trail became an important stage route in Ohio. And, it was upon this stage coach route that the village of McCutchenville was founded in the early 1800s. One of the first buildings erected in this village was the Overland Inn. It was built in 1829 by Colonel Joseph McCutchen. A famous visitor to this inn was author Charles Dickens.
Over the years, the Overland Inn has served as a hotel, a stage coach stop and finally an apartment building. In 1964, the Wyandot County Historical Society purchased the property and began a lengthy restoration process. After three years, the original restoration was complete and the Wyandot County Historical Society dedicated the Overland Hotel as a historic stage coach museum. THE OVERLAND INN
It is probably best to start with the history of the Ohio State Route 53. Ohio 53 generally follows the path of the Harrison Trail trough Wyandot County in Ohio. The Harrison Trail was a trail mapped and used by General William Henry Harrison during the War of 1812. His unrealized plan was to not only use this trail to defend the Ohio frontier from Indians, but to also use this trail in a possible invasion of Canada. Harrison's Trail followed very closely the Scioto Trail. This Trail was burned by Native Americans in Ohio from the confluence of the Scioto and Ohio Rivers at Portsmouth, Ohio all the way north to Lake Erie at Sandusky, Ohio.
At the conclusion of the War of 1812, Harrison's Trail became an important stage route in Ohio. And, it was upon this stage coach route that the village of McCutchenville was founded in the early 1800s. One of the first buildings erected in this village was the Overland Inn. It was built in 1829 by Colonel Joseph McCutchen. A famous visitor to this inn was author Charles Dickens.
Over the years, the Overland Inn has served as a hotel, a stage coach stop and finally an apartment building. In 1964, the Wyandot County Historical Society purchased the property and began a lengthy restoration process. After three years, the original restoration was complete and the Wyandot County Historical Society dedicated the Overland Hotel as a historic stage coach museum. On this day in 1782, the Gnaddenhutten Massacre took place. Nearly 100 Christian Native Americans in Gnadenhutten, Ohio were killed by Militia from Pennsylvania in a retaliatory attack for a raid that took place in Pennsylvania. Unionville Center, Ohio
Unionville Center was originally founded as Unionville. The name was changed upon application for a post office as there was already a Unionville in Ohio.
Unionville Center
This village was called Unionville in its earliest days. The town was built upon land originally owned by Benjamin Cutler. Mr. Cutler built a house on the site years before the organization of Unionville. He also maintained a small country store. The Darby Seceder Church was formed in the area in 1824. It would later be known as the Unionville United Presbyterian Church. Around 1835 this congregation built their first church building. This building was used until a larger building was built between 1856 to 1857. John and Frederick Sager built a saw mill on Big Darby Creek, near the village site, in 1835. The village was platted on February 8, 1847 by Union County Surveyor, William B. Irwin, originally containing 15 lots and 2 streets. On May 11, 1852 Charles Warren Fairbanks was born near Unionville Center. He would later become the Vice President of the United States, serving under Theodore Roosevelt. The Fairbanks Local School District would later be named to honor this man. The Methodist Church at Unionville, first organized in the 1820s, built a church building in the village between 1856 and 1858. The village was officially recognized on March 3, 1879 by the county government, with the official name being Unionville Center. Upon its organization, there were over 200 residents of the village. The first village elections were held in 1879, with F. N. Mattoon elected first mayor. This town once supported a tannery, two sawmills, a flour mill, a school, and a tile factory.
The Darby Rural School District was chartered in 1915. A substantial brick building was built by this district in 1925. The school district was consolidated with the Chuckery School district in 1937. This district was known as Chuckery-Darby School, and it was eventually consolidated into the Fairbanks Local School District.

Allen Center, Union County, Ohio
Allen Center's first business was an ashery, a few years prior to Joel Eaton's purchase of five acres of land between 1848-49. This tract of land was platted into a few lots that would comprise the town. A US post office was was established in February of 1851, and Reuben Foote was the postmaster. The Allen Center Baptist Church was formed in 1854. The congregation built a frame church building in 1872. The church congregation still exists today. Barnet Bennet established a general store in a room of his two story house in 1862. He sold his business to Jacob Painter by about 1865, who eventually sold out all his store stock by 1875. The post office ceased operation at the start of the Civil War. In 1863, the Allen Center Protestant Methodist Church was organized. The congregation also built a small log building for worship in the same year. By 1875 the congregation was disbanded, and the church property was sold. Today the Allen Center Baptist Church remains in the community. The village is also home to the Allen Township Hall.
The first school session held in Allen Township was probably held in the winter of 1829-1830. This school session was taught by Wilson Reed in an abandoned cabin near Buck Run in the southeastern part of the township. By 1883 there were ten sub districts in Allen Township, each being held in a one room schoolhouse. These schools were Henpeck, Stringtown, Greenwood, Railroad, Little Red Schoolhouse, Buck Run, Allen Center, Connolly, Pottersburg, and one Unknown.
In 1924 the Allen Township Rural School district was chartered. The building that housed this school was erected in Allen Center in 1912. This school district became a part of the Marysville School District in 1949.
