On this day in 1822, the Florida Territory was established.

On this day in 1844, ether was first used as an anesthesia by surgeon Dr. Crawford Long in the United States.

On this day in 1867, the Alaskan Territory was purchased by the United States in a purchase known as Seward's Folly. The land was purchased for $7.2 million which averaged about $0.02 an acre.

On this day in 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot in Washington, D. C. by John Hinkley, Jr.

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1886, it was reported that Hiram Kent was now working for John Temple.
