On this day in 1863, the SS Georgiana, purportedly the most powerful Confederate cruiser ever built, was destroyed on her maiden voyage with a cargo valued at over $1,000,000 aboard.

On this day in 1918, the US Congress approves Day Light Savings Time and creates Time Zones across the United States.

On this day in 1941, the 99th Pursuit Squadron of the Army Air Corp was activated. This Squadron was an all-African American unit that was known as the Tuskegee Airmen.

On this day in 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed the United States over radio in the first of his "fireside" chats.

On this day in 1965, the wreckage of the SS Georgiana was discovered by teenage diver, E. Lee Spence. The wreckage was discovered 102 years to the day of its sinking. The wreck had a salvage value of over $50,000,000.

And, on this day in Chuckery in 1895, it was reported that Miss Mattie Congrove has recently returned to Chuckery from a two-month visit to Athens, Ohio.
