On this day in 1928, the St. Francis Dam in California collapsed. The resulting flood surge killed more than 600 people.

On this day in 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed the United States over radio in the first of his "fireside" chats.

On this day in 1993, the Blizzard of 1993 strikes the United States. The resulting weather included tornados, record wind storms, record low temperatures, and large snow falls.

And, on this day in Chuckery in 1890, it was reported that the Mitchell School is on a one week break.
