The Fairbanks School District - Millcreek Township Roots

One of the first schools held in Millcreek Township was in the abandoned cabin of Ephraim Burroughs. Mrs. Martha Gulick, daughter of early settler William Richey, Sr. was the first teacher in this school. She was succeeded by Pierce Lamphere. By 1883 there were nine subdistricts in Millcreek Township that were housed in the one room school houses. These one room schools included Beecher, Liggett, Tossey, Shields, Oraville, Faulkner, Rausch, Myers(Sub-District no.1) and Watkins. These subdistricts were all consolidated into just one centralized district school held at Watkins by 1937. The school district was called Millcreek Rural School. For a period of time, Millcreek students would go to Marysville for their senior year. This school district was eventually abosorbed by the Fairbanks Local School District.  And, the building at Watkins was utilized as an elementary school for Fairbanks until 1983.
