On this day in 1835, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was formed in Kirtland, Ohio.

On this day in 1849, President James K. Polk became the first sitting US President to have his picture taken.

On this day in 1859, Oregon was admitted to the Union.

On this day in 1876, Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent on the telephone on the same day as Elisha Gray.

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1903, Ernest Doellinger bought the Elliott farm.
