On this day in 1847, the United States bought Florida from Spain for $5 million.

On this day in 1855, the Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania was founded in State College, Pennsylvania. This eventually became Pennsylvania State University.

On this day in 1862, Jefferson Davis was inaugurated as the first and only President of the Confederate States of America. He had served as the provisional president of the Confederacy since February 18, 1861.

On this day in 1889, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Washington were admitted to the Union.

On this day in 1959, the first Daytona 500 was raced with Lee Petty winning.

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1893, A. Woodworth was in Chuckery selling his patented carpet stretcher and tacker.
