On this day in 1637, the tulip market collapses as bulb sellers cannot find buyers in the Netherlands.

On this day in 1690, the first paper money in the New World is issued in Massachusetts.

On this day in 1783, Spain recognized the United States.

On this day in 1809, the United States created the Illinois Territory.

On this day in 1913, the Sixteenth Amendment was ratified. This created a federal income tax in the United States.

On this day in 1917, the diplomatic relationship between the United States and Germany ended.

On this day in 1959, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper are killed in a plane crash near Clearlake, Iowa. This event is later referenced in Don McLean's hit American Pie as, "The Day the Music Died."

And, in Chuckery, Ohio in 1886, many from the neighborhood spent last Thursday in Marysville at the livestock auction.
